Bed Size Chart: US, UK & EU Mattress Dimensions
Use this bed size chart to compare mattress width and length in inches and centimeters, decode regional size names, and choose dimensions that match your frame and room.

What are the standard bed sizes?
The common US mattress sizes are Twin 38 × 75 in, Twin XL 38 × 80 in, Full 54 × 75 in, Queen 60 × 80 in, King 76 × 80 in and California King 72 × 84 in. In the UK, Single is 90 × 190 cm, Double 135 × 190 cm, King 150 × 200 cm and Super King 180 × 200 cm. Continental European mattresses are often sold by centimeter dimensions such as 90 × 200, 140 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200.
Every measurement in this bed size chart is width × length. It describes the mattress, not the outside of the bed frame. Common names are regional labels, not guarantees of international compatibility.
US bed size chart: inches and centimeters
Use the inch dimensions as the reference for this US bed size chart. Centimeters are calculated with 1 inch = 2.54 cm and displayed to one decimal place. These are conventional nominal dimensions; the selected manufacturer’s product measurements take priority.
| Size | Inches | Centimeters (approx.) | Planning use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | 38 × 75 | 96.5 × 190.5 | Compact single sleeper |
| Twin XL | 38 × 80 | 96.5 × 203.2 | Longer single-sleeper option |
| Full / Double | 54 × 75 | 137.2 × 190.5 | More width for one adult |
| Queen | 60 × 80 | 152.4 × 203.2 | Shared bed or spacious solo bed |
| King | 76 × 80 | 193 × 203.2 | Wider shared sleeping surface |
| California King | 72 × 84 | 182.9 × 213.4 | Extra length; narrower than King |
| Split King | 76 × 80 | 193 × 203.2 | Two 38 × 80 in Twin XL halves |
| Split California King | 72 × 84 | 182.9 × 213.4 | Two 36 × 84 in halves |
References: Sealy, Casper and Tempur-Pedic. Full-size specifications can be 53 or 54 inches wide; some brands also use slightly shorter Twin or Full lengths. This is why a general chart is not a substitute for a product drawing.
Twin vs Twin XL
Twin XL adds five inches of length without adding width. That matters when a narrow room can accommodate a longer bed but not a wider one. Confirm both the frame and fitted sheet are XL: a standard Twin sheet or frame should not be assumed to stretch or extend to fit.
Full vs Queen
Using the 54-inch Full reference, a Queen adds six inches of width and five inches of length. Width and length solve different problems. A solo sleeper may value the wider Full, while someone whose feet approach the end may need extra length even when sleeping alone.
King vs California King
California King is four inches longer and four inches narrower than King. It is not an across-the-board upgrade. The nominal surface areas are 6,048 and 6,080 square inches respectively, so choose between extra legroom and extra side-to-side room.
UK bed size chart: cm and converted inches
UK shopping labels such as “4ft 6 double” and “5ft king” are familiar nominal names. They are not exact mathematical conversions of the commonly quoted centimeter dimensions. For international comparison, the UK bed size chart takes the centimeter size as its reference and converts it to inches.
| UK size | Centimeters | Converted inches (approx.) | Planning use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small single | 75 × 190 | 29.5 × 74.8 | Narrow single-sleeper option |
| Single | 90 × 190 | 35.4 × 74.8 | Conventional UK single |
| Small double | 120 × 190 | 47.2 × 74.8 | Roomier solo; compact shared option |
| Double | 135 × 190 | 53.1 × 74.8 | Standard UK double |
| King | 150 × 200 | 59.1 × 78.7 | Wider and longer than UK double |
| Super king | 180 × 200 | 70.9 × 78.7 | Wide shared bed |
Nominal centimeter dimensions: Dreams UK size chart. Always check the exact mattress and frame specifications.
A small double can provide a generous solo sleeping surface while preserving more floor space than a standard double. For two adults, however, extra width may be worthwhile if the room supports it. Compare the space each person receives and the access on both sides, rather than assuming that the word “double” guarantees enough personal room.
When importing a frame, record its intended mattress size in writing. A centimeter label on a UK retailer’s page does not automatically mean it uses a continental format. A UK Single at 90 × 190 cm and a continental 90 × 200 cm Single have equal width but different length.
European bed size chart: shop by centimeters
“EU” in this guide means commonly encountered continental European metric formats, not one compulsory size system for every European country. Names and available lengths vary by market and manufacturer. A listing that says 160 × 200 cm is more useful than an unqualified “queen.”
| Dimension label | Centimeters | Converted inches (approx.) | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 × 200 cm | 80 × 200 | 31.5 × 78.7 | Narrow single or half of a 160 cm pair |
| 90 × 200 cm | 90 × 200 | 35.4 × 78.7 | Common continental single |
| 100 × 200 cm | 100 × 200 | 39.4 × 78.7 | Wider single; availability varies |
| 120 × 200 cm | 120 × 200 | 47.2 × 78.7 | Wide solo / compact shared option |
| 140 × 200 cm | 140 × 200 | 55.1 × 78.7 | Compact double format |
| 160 × 200 cm | 160 × 200 | 63 × 78.7 | Shared sleeping format |
| 180 × 200 cm | 180 × 200 | 70.9 × 78.7 | Wider shared sleeping format |
| 200 × 200 cm | 200 × 200 | 78.7 × 78.7 | Large square format; check local availability |
Market examples: IKEA Germany. This European bed size chart includes common metric formats; availability of 100 cm width and other variants depends on the seller. Some markets also offer 190, 210 or 220 cm lengths and larger widths.
Two 90 × 200 cm mattresses placed side by side create a 180 × 200 cm footprint. That arithmetic does not prove that a particular frame supports a split setup: inspect the center support, slats, mattress retainers and any independent adjustment mechanism. A ridge, gap or height difference can affect the finished surface even when the nominal numbers add up.
For a hotel, rental property or relocation purchase, save the actual dimensions rather than translating a label. Specify the mattress, base and fitted sheets as separate items. This prevents a supplier from substituting a locally familiar “king” that is physically different from the size you intended.
US vs UK vs EU: similar does not mean identical
| Comparison | Size A | Size B | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Queen vs UK King | 152.4 × 203.2 cm | 150 × 200 cm | US Queen is 2.4 cm wider and 3.2 cm longer |
| US Queen vs metric 160 | 152.4 × 203.2 cm | 160 × 200 cm | Metric 160 is 7.6 cm wider but 3.2 cm shorter |
| UK Double vs metric 140 | 135 × 190 cm | 140 × 200 cm | Metric 140 adds 5 cm width and 10 cm length |
| UK Super King vs metric 180 | 180 × 200 cm | 180 × 200 cm | Nominal dimensions match; check actual fit |
| US King vs UK Super King | 193.04 × 203.2 cm | 180 × 200 cm | US King adds 13.04 cm width and 3.2 cm length |
The international bed size chart above compares the stated nominal dimensions. It is not a compatibility endorsement. A few centimeters can be enough to prevent a mattress from sitting correctly inside a frame or to leave an unwanted gap. Do not squeeze a mattress into a smaller opening or assume a fitted sheet will compensate.
“Close enough” is especially unreliable with rigid frame openings, recessed platforms and split adjustable bases. Ask the frame maker which mattress dimensions it accepts, including any tolerance. Keep the answer with the order confirmation so the intended specification is clear if the delivered item differs.

Split, extra-long and specialty bed sizes
This bed size chart covers mainstream adult formats first. Specialty labels, RV mattresses and custom beds are less consistent, so request an exact drawing rather than treating a name as an industry-wide specification.
| Label | Common reference in inches | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Full XL | 53–54 × 80 | Width varies by brand; longer than standard Full |
| Short / RV Queen | 60 × 75 | Five inches shorter than a standard US Queen |
| Olympic Queen | 66 × 80 | Six inches wider than a standard US Queen |
| Wyoming King | 84 × 84 | Oversized square format |
| Texas King | 80 × 98 | Long oversized format |
| Alaskan King | 108 × 108 | Oversized square format; custom fit essential |
Specialty reference dimensions: Casper size guide. RV models may have shortened lengths, rounded corners or cut-outs; these names alone are not sufficient for ordering.
Split King does not mean a different total mattress size from standard US King. It means two independent halves. Standard Twin mattresses are shorter than Twin XL, so a pair of Twins does not make the standard King length. Check the seam, the base specification and whether each side needs its own fitted sheet.
Before committing to an uncommon size, check the complete replacement ecosystem: frame, foundation, protectors, fitted sheets, topper and future mattress availability. Savings on one item can disappear if everything else requires a custom order. Measure the delivery route as carefully as the destination room.
How to use the bed size chart to choose a mattress

Start with the tallest sleeper
Compare mattress length with body height and the space used by pillows. Try the normal sleeping position instead of standing beside the mattress and assuming equal height means a good fit. A footboard can make a borderline length feel more restrictive.
Check shared width
Divide nominal width by two for a simple comparison, not a comfort guarantee. A US Queen offers 30 inches per person; a US King offers 38. Movement, preferred separation and body size still need a real-life test.
Keep daily access usable
A larger mattress is not helpful if it blocks the wardrobe or forces one person to climb over the other. Tape the full frame outline, add bedside furniture and open every nearby door and drawer before making the final choice.
If two options look close, compare the change in each direction separately. An extra 20 cm of width affects both side routes when the bed is centered, while an extra 10 cm of length consumes space at the foot. That distinction is more useful than simply comparing total surface area.
For a guest room, start with the expected users and how often the room is occupied. For a primary bedroom, prioritize the everyday layout over occasional maximum capacity. A shared bed should be tested by both sleepers, with their normal pillows and sleeping positions, before a larger or smaller size is accepted as comfortable.
How much room do you need around a bed?
There is no single room size that guarantees a particular bed will work. The frame, doors, storage, walking routes and furniture all affect the result. Use outside frame dimensions—not just the mattress dimensions from the bed size chart—to test room fit.
Planning length = frame length + head clearance + foot clearance.
These formulas describe a rectangular planning envelope, not a building-code or accessibility approval.
For ordinary residential planning, testing roughly 24–30 inches (61–76 cm) on a usable side and about 30–36 inches (76–91 cm) at the foot can reveal problems early. These are adjustable starting allowances, not universal minimums. Drawer opening, mobility needs, a frequently used route or a larger body may require more space.
Worked example: a Queen in a 10 × 10 ft room

Assume a particular Queen frame measures 64 × 84 inches outside. In a 120 × 120-inch room, centering its width leaves (120 − 64) ÷ 2 = 28 inches on each side. With the head end against the wall, the remaining foot space is 120 − 84 = 36 inches. Those figures are only the empty-room geometry.
A dresser projecting 18 inches into that foot zone would leave just 18 inches between dresser and bed, before its drawers open. The same mattress therefore produces a very different result once furniture is included. Rotate or move furniture, compare another frame, or reduce the bed size as needed.
How to measure a mattress, frame and bedding

- Record mattress width and length. Measure edge to edge on a flat, supported mattress. Do not follow a curved seam with the tape. Check the label and product specification as well; a worn or compressed mattress may not represent its original nominal dimensions.
- Measure the frame opening. Record the usable mattress recess, not the decorative outside rail. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions, slat spacing and center support requirements. Matching width and length alone does not establish adequate support.
- Measure the outside furniture footprint. Include the widest upholstery, headboard wings, projecting feet and footboard. For a storage bed, record drawer travel or lift-up operating space separately. Do not add a generic frame allowance when an exact drawing is available.
- Measure mattress depth. Width and length are only two dimensions. Include any topper when selecting fitted-sheet pocket depth, and check the sheet’s stated fit range. Mattress thickness is not standardized by the Twin, Queen or King label.
- Test the delivery route. Measure doors, hall turns, stairs and lift openings. Check the largest packaged or rigid component and whether the bed can be assembled inside the room. Never assume a mattress can be folded unless its manufacturer permits it.
- Keep one unit system on the order. Write width × length × depth with units and region. Retain the product code and dimension sheet. This is especially important when the frame, mattress and bedding come from different suppliers.
Conversion rules without rounding confusion
Multiply inches by 2.54 to obtain centimeters; divide centimeters by 2.54 to obtain inches. A 60 × 80-inch mattress is exactly 152.4 × 203.2 cm as a mathematical conversion. A retailer may round that label, but rounding does not turn it into a 150 × 200 cm mattress.
When comparing entries in the bed size chart, keep full precision before rounding the displayed result. This guide uses one decimal place in most tables for readability and retains extra precision where it explains a difference. Do not use rounded chart values as fabrication tolerances.
Common mistakes when using a bed size chart
Translating the name
A “king” bought in another country may have a different width and length. Put the region and actual dimensions beside the label before comparing products or reusing existing bedding.
Buying sheets by width alone
A fitted sheet also needs the correct length and pocket depth. A topper or deep pillow-top mattress may change the required fit even if the nominal mattress size stays the same.
Treating a duvet as a mattress
Duvets and flat sheets are designed to drape beyond the mattress. Their labels and dimensions follow different conventions. Read the bedding product dimensions instead of transferring mattress numbers.
Ignoring frame bulk
A slim platform and a thick upholstered bed can hold the same mattress but occupy different floor areas. Headboard wings may also interfere with bedside tables or switches.
Calling every split bed a King
Two separate mattresses create whatever footprint their actual dimensions produce. Two 90 cm metric singles and two US Twin XL mattresses are different pairs, even if both are marketed as a split bed.
Assuming a chart guarantees fit
A bed size chart helps create a shortlist from nominal dimensions. The final decision requires the exact product specifications, the frame’s allowed fit and a measured room plan. Keep all three together before checkout.

What are the standard bed sizes in the US?
Common US mattress sizes are Twin 38 × 75 inches, Twin XL 38 × 80, Full 54 × 75, Queen 60 × 80, King 76 × 80 and California King 72 × 84. Some brands publish slightly different nominal Full or Twin measurements, so check the exact product specification.
What size is a queen bed in centimeters?
A US Queen mattress measuring 60 × 80 inches converts to 152.4 × 203.2 cm. It is not the same size as a UK King at 150 × 200 cm or a continental 160 × 200 cm mattress.
Is a UK king the same size as a US king?
No. A UK King is normally 150 × 200 cm. A US King is normally 76 × 80 inches, or 193.04 × 203.2 cm. The US size is substantially wider.
What is a standard double bed size?
The answer depends on the market. A UK Double is normally 135 × 190 cm. A common US Full or Double reference is 54 × 75 inches, or 137.16 × 190.5 cm, although some brands list 53 inches of width. Always specify the region.
What is a European queen size bed?
There is no single universal European queen designation. A seller may use queen for 160 × 200 cm, but naming differs. Buy using the stated centimeter dimensions and the frame compatibility specification, not the name alone.
Is California king bigger than king?
California King is longer but narrower: 72 × 84 inches versus 76 × 80 inches for a US King. A standard King has 6,080 square inches of surface area; California King has 6,048 square inches.
Do two twin beds make a king?
Two US Twin XL mattresses, each 38 × 80 inches, make the nominal 76 × 80-inch Split King footprint. Two standard 38 × 75-inch Twins make 76 × 75 inches, which is five inches shorter than a standard King.
Are mattress sizes the same as bed frame sizes?
No. Mattress dimensions describe the sleeping surface. The frame outside dimensions include rails, upholstery, a headboard and possibly a footboard. Confirm both the frame mattress opening and its full room footprint.
Can I use UK bedding on a US mattress?
Do not assume it will fit. Compare the fitted sheet width, length and pocket depth against the actual mattress, including any topper. Flat sheets and duvets have different sizing requirements and are not interchangeable with mattress dimensions.
How do I choose the right bed size for my room?
Identify the mattress region and dimensions, then use the actual frame outside width and length. Reserve walking and furniture-opening space, tape the footprint on the floor, and test the layout with the Bed Size Calculator before ordering.

Retailer guides sometimes disagree on a nominal measurement, particularly Full width. The table uses 54 inches as a common planning reference and explicitly notes 53-inch alternatives. Exact product dimensions, construction tolerances and manufacturer compatibility instructions override a general-purpose chart.
This is a sizing and room-planning guide, not a mattress comfort test, medical recommendation or compliance assessment. Common continental formats do not represent every country, custom mattress, antique frame or specialty bed.
