Step 1: Measure the room’s total perimeter

For a simple rectangular room, measure the width and length, then apply the formula: perimeter equals two times the width plus two times the length. For an irregular or L-shaped room, it’s more accurate to measure each individual wall segment with a tape measure and add them together, since a single width-times-length formula doesn’t account for extra inside or outside corners. Round each measurement up to the nearest inch rather than down, since underestimating a wall segment compounds across the whole room.
