An undersized fan in a large room struggles to move enough air and looks visually lost on a big ceiling, while an oversized fan in a small room creates uncomfortably strong drafts and can leave too little wall clearance for safe, quiet operation.

Multiply the room’s width by its length to get the total square footage, since blade span recommendations are based almost entirely on this number rather than the room’s shape or ceiling style.
