More overlap is not always better. Excess fabric can create a bulky stack, block furniture and place too much weight on the rod. The strongest result comes from combining sensible overlap with suitable hardware rather than adding width without a plan.

How to measure blackout curtains correctly

Measure the outside width and height of the frame or trim. Then inspect the surrounding wall. Record the available space above, below and beside the window, along with nearby corners, cabinets, switches, vents and furniture.
